China National Space Administration (CNSA) and National Institute of Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia (LAPAN) jointly held "International Workshop on Early Warning and Monitoring Earthquake by Using Electromagnetism Detecting Satellite" in Jakarta, Indonesia, on July 25-27, 2007. The Secretariat of Asia-Pacific Multilateral Cooperation in Space Technology and Applications (AP-MCSTA) is the co-organizer of the workshop. Mr. Luo Ge, Vice Administrator of CNSA and Secretary General of AP-MCSTA, and Mr. Adi Sadewo Salatun, Chairman of LAPAN, were present the opening ceremony as the co-chairmen of the workshop; the representatives of U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) and United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA) delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.
About 130 representatives from 12 nations and international organizations including Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Pakistan, Peru, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, UN-OOSA and UN-ESCAP, joined the workshop. The workshop performed discussion with focus on five aspects, i.e. space environment and ground system, satellite platform and payload technology, data processing and distribution, data calibration, and satellite orbit.
After the workshop, all the representatives adopted a recommendation for holding such an international workshop regularly and establishing an international cooperation mechanism for further relative study and cooperation, and the Secretariat of AP-MCSTA will be responsible for the relevant coordination and communications. This is the first worldwide international workshop on early warning and monitoring of earthquake by using space technology, and the success of this workshop has won high appraisal from all participating representatives.
